The property was located within the reported path of the tornado, and repairs remained unresolved while the owner and insurance carrier differed regarding the nature and extent of storm-related damage. Photographs taken shortly after the event provided only a partial record of the post-storm conditions, making a detailed forensic engineering evaluation necessary to document the remaining physical evidence, assess observed damage patterns, and evaluate which conditions were consistent with the reported tornado event.
The Problem
What We Were Retained to Evaluate
Following a reported tornado event in Jupiter, damage and distress were observed at portions of the roof framing, uplift connections, wall sheathing, and other building components. The origin and causation of the observed conditions were disputed, with differing positions regarding the extent of storm-related damage versus pre-existing deterioration, maintenance-related conditions, and prior damage. We were retained to evaluate the physical evidence and determine which conditions were consistent with the reported storm event.
THE ENGINEERING RESPONSE
How We Approached It
We systematically documented damage patterns across the affected structures, evaluated roof framing and uplift connections, and reviewed the continuity of the structural load path. Observed conditions were compared with available storm data and the corresponding wind forces and loading conditions associated with the reported event.
Damaged components and failure surfaces were also examined for evidence of pre-existing corrosion, decay, deterioration, or prior distress. By considering these conditions together with the location and pattern of damage, connection performance, and anticipated wind loading, we evaluated whether the observed failures were consistent with the reported storm event, pre-existing conditions, or a combination of contributing factors.

- Forensic engineering report documenting findings, causation analysis, and technical conclusions
Outcome
The forensic evaluation distinguished conditions consistent with storm-related damage from those attributable to pre-existing deterioration, prior damage, or other non-storm-related conditions. The findings provided a technically supported basis for understanding the nature, extent, and causation of the observed damage and assisted in the resolution of the disputed property claim.
