Structural Damage Concrete Column Assessment, Palm Beach FL
Capacity assessment of a distressed reinforced concrete column in Palm Beach, producing an immediate shoring directive and a sealed repair detail restoring full design capacity.

STRUCTURE TYPE
Reinforced concrete column
our role
Assessing structural engineer
SERVICE LINE
Minor impact, unclear structural consequence
The column stands in a service area where vehicles pass within inches of the structure, and moisture had been reaching it from an adjacent drainage detail for years. The impact that finally exposed the reinforcement looked minor, which is precisely why the owner needed to know whether the damage was cosmetic or structural.
The Problem
What We Were Retained to Evaluate
A reinforced concrete column had lost cover and exposed corroded ties after vehicle impact compounded by long-term moisture intrusion. The space around it remained in use, and the owner needed to know quickly whether the column was still safe to carry its share of the structure above.
THE ENGINEERING RESPONSE
How We Approached It
We measured the remaining sound section, assessed the condition and effective area of the longitudinal bars and ties, and recalculated column capacity against its tributary load. Because confinement at the damaged region had been compromised, we evaluated the slenderness and buckling consequences rather than treating it as a cover-repair problem.
Scope of Work
What the Engagement Included
- Field measurement of remaining sound concrete section
- Assessment of longitudinal bar and tie condition and effective area
- Tributary load determination and capacity recalculation
- Slenderness and confinement loss evaluation
- Immediate temporary shoring directive for the affected bay
- Sealed repair detail restoring full design capacity
Outcome
The assessment produced an immediate shoring directive for the affected bay and a sealed repair detail, with jacketing and tie replacement, that restored full design capacity.
